2025 Sustainability Report Highlights Progress in Innovation, Operational Excellence and Polystyrene Circularity
The Woodlands, Texas – Thurs., July 17, 2025 – AmSty, a leading producer of styrene monomer, polystyrene and certified recycled polystyrene in the Americas, today released its 2025 sustainability report, "Making Waves." The report reflects AmSty's bold approach to sustainability and details how the company is accelerating its impact across operations, industry partnerships and environmental stewardship.
"At AmSty, we're not just participating in change – we're driving it," said Dr. Randy Pogue, AmSty President and CEO. "This year's report reflects how AmSty is pushing boundaries, advancing circularity and delivering meaningful change."
The report highlights notable environmental achievements, including the expansion of a hazardous waste reduction initiative first piloted at the Hanging Rock, Ohio, polystyrene plant. In just two and a half years, the program has reduced hazardous waste by 20% and has now been scaled to include the company's Joliet, Illinois, and Torrance, California, facilities.
Safety remains a cornerstone of AmSty's culture. Multiple sites have now achieved seven years without a recordable injury, with the Marietta, Ohio, plant reaching a milestone of nine years. This performance reflects the company's "we work safely or not at all" philosophy and ongoing investment in people and process safety.
AmSty's investments in infrastructure are also advancing sustainability and performance. A multi-year reliability improvement initiative is underway at the company's St. James, Louisiana, styrene facility. Meanwhile, in Marietta, Ohio, control systems are being upgraded to cutting-edge digital technology that will enhance efficiency and long-term operational reliability.
In the area of circularity, AmSty continues to lead. In 2024, the company completed its first sale of PolyRenew® styrene sourced from sustainable feedstocks to a customer in the automotive industry – a milestone that builds on the foundation of its growing portfolio of circular materials.
In early 2025, AmSty also helped launch the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA), a coalition of industry stakeholders working together to increase the circularity of polystyrene products across North America. The PSRA is affiliated with the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) and reflects AmSty's belief that collaboration is essential for long-term, scalable solutions.
"These achievements show what's possible when we combine vision with action," said Richard Shaw, Director of Circular Economy & Sustainability at AmSty. "'Making Waves' is not just a theme, it's a reflection of how we're pushing past barriers, scaling innovation and collaborating for solutions that reduce plastic waste and support a more circular economy."
The 2025 report also outlines how AmSty's products and practices support the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and reinforce the company's values of safety, innovation and environmental responsibility.
AmSty materials are used in essential everyday products across industries such as packaging, appliances, insulation, medical equipment and automotive manufacturing. As part of its sustainability journey, the company continues to invest in technologies and partnerships that advance circularity and reduce environmental impact.
